'Parallel Reality' is the name unofficially applied to an alternate reality in which the Federation, as a democratic alliance of worlds, never emerged. Instead, Earth and a number of other planets banded together to conquer and establish an empire (United Empire of Planets), ruled through fear.
Little is know about the empire, but it was continuously expansionist. Eventually, it stretched too far, attacking Klingon and Romulan worlds. Those two species formed a loose alliance in response, and began a counter-attack. They were aided by a rebellion internal to the empire, which fought to end despotic rule, and which cooperated mainly with the Klingons. Several Starfleet crews joined the rebellion. When last seen, the empire was crumbling in the face of this multi-pronged assault, having lost a number of worlds to its enemies. Starfleet, as a tool of imperial repression, was fighting a losing battle, against both external enemies and significant levels of desertion.
The Parallel Reality has had three known encounters with 'our' reality. In February 2391, the Parallel Reality's starship Calhoun accidentally shifted to this reality, and encountered its mirror ship. 'Our' reality's Calhoun mediated a truce between loyalists and rebels aboard the 'parallel' Calhoun. Scientists found a way to return all to their own universe.
In July 2392, now possessing the scientific knowledge to enter our reality, officers of the parallel Calhoun, on a mission from their Starfleet, infiltrated our reality's Calhoun and took over -killing several crewmembers in the process. They took the ship -a significant, transwarp-equiped prize for a much-diminished fleet- back to their reality, dumping its surviving crew on an abandoned world. (During this time, the 'parallel' Lorvok tricked 'our' Chris Roberts into believing that he was 'our' Lorvok, and unknowingly conceived a child with her.) 'Our' Calhoun was subsequently taken by the Parallel Reality's rebels, and returned to its rightful crew.
At a later date, when the Parallel Reality's Lorvok seized his son from 'our' reality, the "parallel" Jennifer Su, an Empire loyalist, unexpectedly assisted 'our' Jennifer Su and Dawn Summers in finding him. They successfully travelled into the Parallel Reality and retrieved the child.
Characters
(Deceased characters not included.)
Captain Jennifer Su
An Empire loyalist, and ruthless captain of the Calhoun. Persisting in her loyalty to the Empire, she continues to fight its losing war. Dangerous and agressive, enjoying the thrill of violence, she has proved unpredictable at times, to the extent of honouring and helping enemies when they're down. She possesses a sense of honour. She has also mellowed to some extent under the influence of her lover, Chris Roberts.
Captain Dawn Summers
Former first officer of the Calhoun, she joined the rebellion, and now captains a rebel ship.
Captain Ambrose Harris
Captain of a rebel ship, the Lion. Unlike Summers, he has retained the ruthless, violent streak of imperial officers.
Lieutenant Chris Roberts
An officer on the Calhoun, and the captain's lover. Initially accepting violence, and the pleasurable effect it had on Su, she eventually grew sickened and weary with senseless killing, and has made efforts to reduce her lover's ruthlessness.
Yeoman Mahvash Norousyok
Captain Su's bodyguard. Fiercely and utterly loyal, she is a lethal knife-thrower.
Qar
A former Borg drone, he was programmed by Chris Roberts to obey her mindlessly. Utterly devoted to her, he once attempted to kill Dawn Summers when she ordered him to do so. This led to a mixup when he attacked 'our' reality's Dawn Summers, causing 'our' Qar to fight him until both were seriously injured. The 'parallel' Qar was repaired, and eventually given greater freedom by Roberts -though he remained passionately loyal to her. It is unknown whether he is still alive at this date.
