The distinctive square glasses frequently used in Quark's bar aren't glasses at all? They were manufactured as candleholders, but a prop designer for the show turned them upside down and made them into a glass.

The Captain's name on the Original Series changed three times. In the first outline for the pilot, the Captain's name was Robert April. In a second revision some months later, it was changed to James Winter. It was finally changed to Christopher Pike, but after the pilot, it was changed yet again to James T. Kirk. The script for the pilot "The Cage" also went through a name change. In the second revision it was entitled: "Voyage One: The Menagerie."

The Cardassian neck was created for Marc Alaimo. His neck was long enough to do a shoulder, something that make-up designer Michael Westmore hadn't been able to do on other actors. A painting that Michael Westmore saw in a gallery in Studio City inspired the Cardassian forehead. It was an abstract painting of a woman with a spoon in the center of her forehead.
