Crewman Darnell, Captain Kirk, and Dr. McCoy beam down to the ruins on M-113 on Stardate 1513.1.The planet M-113 is filled with the ruins of an ancient civilization. The original inhabitants of the planet needed salt to survive. When the salt on the planet was exhausted, their race died out. In the mid 23rd century, archaeologist Robert Crater and his wife Nancy were studying the ruins on planet M-113. The planet was home to a violent creature. The creature was the last of it's kind. Once there were millions of them. They needed salt to stay alive, but they ran out of salt. The creature was intelligent, and had some sort of telepathic ability. It was able to produce a hypnotic effect that paralyzed its victims. It was also capable of appearing to have another form. This was a mental illusion, rather than shape shifting, because the creature could look different to according to the viewer. The creature killed Nancy Crater for the salt contained in her body, and assumed her form for Professor Crater. In return, he supplied the creature with salt. On Stardate 1513.1, Dr. McCoy and Captain Kirk beamed down to perform a routine medical examination of the Craters. The creature killed several crewmen, before its true nature was discovered. Dr. McCoy was forced to kill the creature to save Captain Kirk from it. (TOS: The Man Trap)
