ABOARD - On or within the ship.

ADRIFT - Loose, not moving with propulsion and not docked.

AFT - Toward the stern of the ship.

AHEAD - In a forward direction.

AMIDSHIPS - In or toward the center of the ship.

ASTERN - In back of the ship, opposite of ahead.

BEARING - The direction of an object expressed either as a true bearing as shown on the chart, or as a bearing relative to the heading of the ship.

BELOW - Beneath the deck.

BOW - The forward part of a ship.

BRIDGE - The location from which a vessel is steered and its speed controlled. "Control Station" is really a more appropriate term for small craft.

BULKHEAD - A vertical partition separating compartments.

BUOY - An object with fixed position used for marking a position in space or a hazard.

CABIN - A compartment for passengers or crew.

COURSE - The direction in which a ship is to be steered.

DEAD AHEAD - Directly ahead.

DEAD ASTERN - Directly aft.

DECK - A permanent covering over a compartment, connecting the hull on both sides of the ship. A sort of storey on a ship.

DOCK - A protected area in which vessels can be moored. The term is often used to denote a station or a wharf.

FORWARD - Toward the bow of the ship.

HATCH - An opening in a ship's deck fitted with a tight cover.

HEADING - The direction in which a vessel's bow points at any given time.

HELM - The sation controlling the steering of the ship.

HELMSPERSON - The person who steers the ship.

HULL - The main body of a vessel.

INBOARD - More toward the center of a vessel, inside the vessel.

LOG - A record of courses or operation.

MIDSHIP - Approximately in the location equally distant from the bow and stern.

NAVIGATION - The art and science of conducting a ship safely from one point to another.

PILOTING - Navigation by use of visible references, the stars, etc.

PORT - The left side of a ship looking forward.

QUARTER - The sides of a ship aft of amidships.

QUARTERS - A compartment for passengers or crew.

STARBOARD - The right side of a ship when looking forward.

STEM - The forward most part of the bow.

STERN - The after part of the ship.

UNDERWAY - Vessel in motion, when not docked or adrift.
