(|Anomaly parasites|)
These parasites are from a domain outside normal space-time. Jonathan Archer was infected by them when he was struck by an anomaly in the Expanse. They didn't cause tissue damage but they impaired certain synaptic functions. They prevented the creation of new long term memories. Everything after the infection faded from Captain Archer's memory in a few hours. They exist in a state of interspatial flux. Phlox's colleagues on Denobula believed there was no way to destroy the parasites short of vaporizing Archer in a subspace implosion. Phlox devised a way to use a highly focused anti-proton beam to eradicate the parasites. When he tested the procedure, it eradicated them in the past was well as the present. They exist out of time. When they were unable to complete the procedure, Archer caused a subspace implosion to destroy the parasites, changing history so that the infection never occurred. (ENT: Twilight)
