(|A.I.D. cleanup|)
On Stardate 3619.2, when the U.S.S. Enterprise delayed on at the planet Argus X to investigate the appearance of the dikironium cloud creature, Scotty took the opportunity to perform an A.I.D. cleanup on impulse engine number 2. This cleanup required the hatch on the radioactive disposal vent to be open. The creature later gained entrance to the U.S.S. Enterprise through the open hatch. (TOS: Obession)

(|Ablative Armor|)
Starship protective skin that is designed to vaporize under weapons fire, thereby dissipating energy and protecting the ship's energy systems inside. In other words, ablative armor imposes a counterforce against incoming weapons fire. Ablative armor was a closely-held secret, and until 2372, even Starfleet Operations did not know of it.

(|ACB (Acronym for Annular Confinement Beam)|)
The ACB is a cylindrical force field which is used to ensure that a person being transported remains within the beam. Failure to remain within the confinement field can cause a dangerous release of beam energy, possibly fatally injuring the transport subject and those nearby. The ACB is being generated by the primary energizing coils of a transporter system. The ACB determines the geometry for the subsequent scanning and dematerialization process.

(|Alice series|)
Number 118 in the Alice Series. The Alice series is a type of android from a planet where Harry Mudd ended up when a ship he stole from Deneb V was damaged by the authorities in 2267. The Alice series was made to Harry Mudd's personal specifications. Mudd made 500 Alice's. The body is covered with a self-renewing plastic over a skeleton of beryllium-titanium alloy.None of the android bodies has ever worn out. The estimated duration of the model is 500,000 years. Medi-robots are able to place a human brain within a structurally compatible android body. The androids found humans flawed, and intended to control mankind by serving them. Each android mind is one component of a mass brain linked through a central locus. This is Norman. The Androids said the Makers created them. The Makers were from the Andromeda galaxy. They were humanoid, and robots were common in their civilization. They performed service functions and freed their Makers to evolve a perfect social order. Their home planet's sun went nova and only a few exploratory outposts survived. The Makers all died over the stretch of time. They wouldn't let Harry go. They wanted to study him. Harry declared himself Mudd the First, ruler of the planet. He ordered Norman, the leader of the androids, to get a ship for him. Norman commandeered the U.S.S. Enterprise and brought them to the planet. The crew of the Enterprise, led by Captain Kirk disabled the androids with illogic. The androids were reprogrammed to back to their original purpose which was to adapt the planet for productive use. Mudd was paroled to the android population. He was looked after by 500 androids that look like his wife Stella. (TOS: I, Mudd)

(|Alternative warp|)
Alternative warp allowed Kirk to get to the antimatter universe that Lazarus inhabited. It's sort of a negative magnetic corridor where the two parallel universes meet. It acts as a safety valve. It keeps eternity from blowing up. The corridor is like a prison with explosives at the door. Open the door, and the explosives might go off. When Lazarus's people found a way to slip through the warp, and prove another identical universe existed, it was too much for the matter Lazarus. He could not live, knowing that the other lived. He became obsessed with the idea of destroying his other self, and the fact that it meant his own destruction and everything else meant nothing to him. When someone passed through, a pulsation phenomena occurred in every quadrant of the galaxy and far beyond. It caused complete disruption of normal magnetic and gravimetric fields, time warp distortions, and impossible radiation variations. The phenomena drained the U.S.S. Enterprise's dilithium crystals almost completely. (TOS: The Alternative Factor)

(|Android|)
An android is an automaton made to resemble a human being. This robot, basically consists of a computer system, actuators and sensors inside a human-like body. Androids are intentionally designed this way so as to work in the same environment and to perform similar tasks as humans.

(|Anti-backflow valve|)
The anti-backflow valve is adjacent to the aft plasma vent. On Stardate 51474, the miniturized U.S.S. Rubicon entered the U.S.S. Defiant through the aft plasma vent. Miles O'Brien said that it might be tricky for them to get past the anti-backflow valve. (DS9: One Little Ship)

(|Antigrav|)
Scotty and Spock carry antigravs which they used to carry the probe Nomad.Antigravs reduce the weight of heavy objects. (TOS: The Changeling)

Antigravs are also built into small equipment pallets used for handling cargo. A graviton inverter circuit is a key component of an antigrav. Unfortunately become antigravs unreliable in the presence of high radiation levels.

(|Antigraviton|)
These particles are the opposite of graviton particles and are generated in a standard tractor beam. The presence of these particles in a transporter emitter coil indicate the use of a tractor beam on that transporter beam.

(|Antimatter|)
Matter whose electrical charge properties are the opposite of 'normal' matter.

Matter and antimatter have a tendency to cancel each other out, violently. When two identical particles of matter and antimatter meet there is annihilation. (TOS: The Alternative Factor)

One ounce of antimatter is more powerful than 10,000 cobalt bombs. Captain Kirk used a magnetic vacuum field to transport antimatter to the surface of Tycho IV on Stardate Stardate 3620.7. He used the antimatter to cause a matter/antimatter blast that destroyed the dikironium cloud creature. (TOS: Obession)

The controlled annihilation of matter and antimatter is used as the power source for the warp drive systems aboard Federation starships. Because of the highly volatile nature of antimatter, it has to be stored in special magnetic containment vessels, also known as antimatter pods, to prevent the antimatter from physically touching the storage vessel or any part of the ship.

(|Antimatter containment|)
In warp drive propulsion systems refers antimatter containment to the use of magnetic seals and confinement fields to prevent antimatter from physically touching the surface of the storage pod or any other part of the starship. Failure of antimatter containment is a catastrophic malfunction, generally resulting in total destruction of the spacecraft.

(|Antimatter Converter|)
Tahna Los uses an antimatter converter that he stole from the Cardassians.Device that when used with Bilitrium, turns into an explosive device of significant destructive capability. In 2369, Tahna Los of the Bajoran terrorist group Kohn Ma, stole an antimatter converter from the Cardassians. He obtained Bilitrium from the Duras sisters, which he then used to create a bomb. He intended to collapse the mouth of the wormhole, so that Bajor would not need Federation protection. He was thwarted by Kira Nerys. (DS9: Past Prologue)

(|Antimatter flow regulators|)
These devices regulate the flow of antimatter to the intermix chamber. When the Enterprise NX-01 was sabotaged by Klingon Augments in November 2154, the antimatter flow regulators were locked open. (ENT: Affliction)

Contributed by: Clare Bradley

(|Antimatter generator|)
Device which is able to generate antimatter for the warp drive in case the ship cannot be resupplied in a refuel facility. It may be logical that in normal operation mode onboard antimatter generation is not efficient because it takes more energy then it returns as antimatter. Note that the warpdrive can't run on the impulse fusion reactors like all the other ships systems.

(|Antimatter inducers|)
Archer came up with a way to upgrade the antimatter inducers twice while suffering from parasites that made him unable to form long-term memories in an alternate timeline. The upgrades made it possible to travel farther on less fuel. (ENT: Twilight)

(|antimatter pods|)
After an attack by a Klingon vessel on Stardate 3198.4, the U.S.S. Enterprise suffered blast damage on decks 10 & 11, and minor buckling in the antimatter pods. (TOS: Errand of Mercy)

When the U.S.S. Enterprise was in orbit of Gamma Trianguli VI on Stardate 3715.3, their antimatter pods were losing potency. The antimatter pods later became completely inert. Something on the surface disrupted them, like a pail of water on a fire. It was some kind of beam or transmission that came from the village. (TOS: The Apple)

Contributed by: Clare Bradley

(|Antitime|)
An occurrence of multi-phasic temporal convergence in which time is running in reverse direction. Just like matter and antimatter are time and antitime each other opposite. When colliding they will annihilate each other, causing a breach in space-time upon their collision.

(|Atmospheric system|)
Part of the life support systems that provides breathable air and comfortable temperature and humidity on a starship. Class-M atmosphere is the standard setting on Federation starships, implying 26°C temperature, 45% relative humidity and 101kPa air pressure with a composition of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% trace gases. Part of the starship volume can be switched to other environmental conditions. Oxygen is produced by photosynthetic processing of CO2.

(|Auto destruct|)
A command program in the main computer system of a Federation starship enabling the destruction of the ship in case it would fall into enemy hands. The auto destruct can be initiated by the captain, acknowledged by voice recognition and personal command code. In most cases it is necessary that the first officer or other senior officers confirm the auto destruct. Sometimes a dermal hand print identification verification is also require. A silent count-down can be selected in order not to warn enemy forces that are already aboard.
