 | Diagnostic | |
|---|
|
|---|
| An engineering analysis program used aboard Federation starships intended to permit automated determination of system performance and diagnosis of any malfunctions. Most key systems had a number of such programs available, ranging from level 5 diagnostics (the fastest, and most automated) to level 1 diagnostics (the most thorough, but the slowest, requiring the most manual labour). |
| |
 | Diagnostic Mode 1 | |
|---|
|
|---|
| The most comprehensive systems check, a level 1 involves manual verification by crew members, in case the system's computer diagnostics are untrustworthy. This can take many hours and may even require a system or two to go off-line during the diagnostic check. |
| |
 | Diagnostic Mode 2 | |
|---|
|
|---|
| A swifter procedure than level 1, this still involves crew members manually verifying certain systems, although not necessarily all aspects of them. |
| |
 | Diagnostic Mode 3 | |
|---|
|
|---|
| A short procedure (ten minutes or less) with a manual check of key systems. |
| |
 | Diagnostic Mode 4 | |
|---|
|
|---|
| An automated procedure whereby the computer checks for malfunctions or other anomalies in a system's performance or operation. |
| |
 | Diagnostic Mode 5 | |
|---|
|
|---|
| Level 5 a routine automated procedure taking less than three seconds. Used when time is of the essence or when the computer is too busy with more important, timely functions. |
