(|Accelerated Critical Neural Pathway Formation|)
Accelerated Critical Neural Pathway Formation, or ACNPF, is the enhancement of human brain functions through genetic encoding. Julian Bashir's brain was improved at the age of six. The procedure, like many other forms of genetic engineering, is outlawed in the Federation. (DS9: Doctor Bashir, I Presume?)

(|Aldeberan mud leeches|)
Type of leech native to Aldeberan. Their secretions act as a natural sedative. Place one on the chest and one on the abdomen one hour before bed. Be careful not to roll over, or you might anger them. (ENT: Anomaly)

(|alpha wave inducer|)
An alpha wave inducer is a sleep aid that is only meant for occasional use. (DS9: The Passenger)

(|antichroniton|)
Chroniton particles in the body can be elimated by exposure to a precisely modulated field of antichroniton particles. (VOY: Before and After)

(|antigen|)
An antigen is any foreign substance that triggers an immune response. (VOY: Macrocosm)

(|Antigrav Lift|)
Quark is loaded onto an antigrav lift after being shot.Used to transport patients on a space station. (DS9: Necessary Evil)

(|ARA scan|)
In a hallucination suffered by Voyager's EMH, he performed one of these scans on a Kazon prisoner while he was being questioned, presumably to determine if the prisoner was being truthful. (VOY: Projections)

(|Assimilation|)
Borg term for forced integration of lifeforms and technology into their Collective. For humanoids, assimilation implies transformation into a drone, thereby completely losing their individuality. Nanoprobes are key components in this process. Technology is assimilated by combining and gradually merging existing Borg and new technology.

(|Augments|)
In the 1990s, a group of ambitious scientists attempted to control the human race through selective breeding. The scientists overlooked one fact: Superior ability breeds superior ambition. Augments were supermen in a sense. They were stronger, braver, certainly more ambitious, and more daring. In 1993, a group of these young supermen seized power simultaneously in over 40 nations in what became known as the Eugenics Wars. They were aggressive, arrogant, and began to battle among themselves. Khan claimed that one man would have ruled eventually, as Rome under Caesar, and the Earth would be united. There were some 80 or 90 of them unaccounted for when they were finally defeated. (TOS: Space Seed)

Eighty-four were accounted for when the U.S.S. Enterprise encountered the S.S. Botany Bay on Stardate 3141.9. Inside the sleeper ship were Khan Noonien Singh and his followers, 72 of which survived. After a failed attempt to take over the Enterprise, Khan and his people were left on Ceta Alpha V. (TOS: Space Seed)

Augments are genetically enhanced Humans. Augments are stronger, smarter, and free from sickness with life spans twice as long as Humans. Dr. Arik Soong stole augment embryos from Cold Station 12, and raised them as his own children on a planet in the Trialas system. Soong made some modifications of his own on the Augments. They were around 10 years old when Soong was captured. (ENT: Borderland)

After the Eugenics Wars, Earth's governments couldn't decide what to do with the embryos, so they put them into cold storage. At the time destroying them was too controversial. (ENT: Cold Station 12)

Genetic engineering was in its infancy when the Augments were created. They weren't able to repair all the mistakes. Soong tried to alter the base pairs that regulate neurotransmitter levels in the brain. If he could modify them, he believed aggression and violent behavior would be removed. He was unable to this for the first group of Augments he raised, but hoped to do it for the embryos they took from Cold Station 12, but Malik objected and put Soong in the brig. One of the creators of the Augments once wrote: Superior ability breeds superior ambition. He was later murdered by an Augment. (ENT: The Augments)

In 2152, the Enterprise NX-01 gave one of these devices to the inhabitants of a deuterium mining colony. (ENT: Marauders)
