The Calhoun remains trapped in orbit of the Y-class planet, its three crewmates still missing aboard a Cardassian vessel. A Kazon crew, their vessel seized by the Cardassians, have joined the Calhoun, seeking help. Meanwhile, the Calhoun's officers face ethical dilemmas, as the captain of the USS Courageous - trapped in orbit for the past eleven months - urges them to believe that the only way to survive is to kill their various prisoners and plunder alien vessels.
Unsure whether to consider the Courageous crew friends or potential enemies, the Calhoun officers decide to turn to the Cardassians, hoping to forge an alliance. . .
