 | silicon-based virus | |
|---|
|
|---|
Symptoms of this virus include coughing and nausea. It is highly contagious. The virus doesn't show up on standard scans. Hoshi and Trip became infected with this after visiting an M-Class planet. Because it was an M-Class planet, all life forms should have been carbon based. Phlox thought the virus was brought there, perhaps by a meteorite. Humans are carbon-based, so their immune system can't fight silicon. The virus is sensitive to ionizing radiation, but at levels fatal to Humans. T'Pol and Phlox isolated a specific frequency of radiation that disrupts the silicon matrix of the virus. They were working on a dosage that could slow down the virus without killing the patient. They were unsuccessful. Seven other species developed the radiation cure, but never in time. This virus was used by the Organians to study how physical beings react to the unknown, to determine if a species is ready for first contact. (ENT: Observer Effect)
