Commander Riker is transformed into an australopithecine protohuman when he contracts Barclay's protomorphosis Syndrome. An airborne intron virus that causes humanoids and other animals to develop structural and behavioral characteristics of earlier evolutionary forms. It invades the host's DNA and activates introns. A retrovirus was created using antibodies from amniotic fluid. It was named for Lieutenant Barclay of the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG: Genesis)

(|Bendii Syndrome|)
This rare but usually fatal disease only affects Vulcans over the age of 200, destroying their legendary emotional control. Early symptoms include sudden bursts of rash emotion and anger, but there is only one way to have a foolproof diagnosis, and that is to grow a culture from metathalamus tissue, which may take days.

Unfortunately, the great telepathic strength of Vulcans can project the loss of control to others. One notable death by this disease is Vulcan Ambassador Sarek, in 2368. This condition can be temporarily stabilized by mind melding with another person. (TNG: Sarek)

(|The Blight|)
When the Jem'Hadar conquerors made their move against the Teplan civilization, they unleashed this disease upon the unsuspecting populace. Primary symptoms of the first stage include blue welts and lesions on all skin area. In the second stage of the disease, the almost always fatal one, the welts turn red, in a phase known as "The Quickening".

A cure has been created, however, in 2372 by Julian Bashir. The cure is only bittersweet, though. It does not help the current generation of sufferers, but stops the disease from being passed to their newborns. (DS9: Quickening)
