Drones inside a Borg cube.
|
|
Physiology |
Each Borg has cybernetic implants that differ with the specific designated task. Assimilation is the Borg's means of adding or replacing drones, as well as their sole purpose of existence.
Assimilation is achieved by injecting nano-probes below the victim's subcutaneous layer into the bloodstream, whose blood cells are then attacked and subjugated by the probes to work together and lay the groundwork for connection to the Collective. Thousands of such probes can be injected within seconds, and they will begin the process of assimilation, even if no assimilation facilities are nearby. The intra-molecular processors of nanoprobes are vulnerable to omicron particles. An excessive dose can eliminate them.
Bio-technological interface with Borg cybernetic implants and attachments are also created by the nano-probes in preparation for surgical procedures that may include modified extremities for specific tasks, or optical and aural implants. Constant to all assimilated drones is the neural implant that is unremovable once installed. It is the actual connection the drone has to the rest of the collective, relaying all orders while maintaining records, coordinates, and other information about the drone's activities. The integration of biological and mechanical in the Borg is so complete a Borg cannot survive with all of its implants removed.
Their organic origins require them to go through a regeneration process regularly to replenish their energy. This is done in an alcove, where the Borg connect themselves to the console and operate at the lowest energy level.
Biochips enhance physical abilities and synthesize any organic molecules needed by their biological tissues. Borg need these chips to live.
Borg drones contain an autonomous regeneration sequencer which automatically replicates any Borg circuitry removed or disabled by non-Borg means. They also have axonal amplifiers, a bio-electronic device that serves as a neuroprocessor. Biosynthetic glands replace some original organic glands.
Each drone has about 3.6 million nanoprobes.
The Borg coritcal node is designed to shut down higher brain functions when drones regain their emotions, acting as fail-safe to deactivate drones who start to regain their individuality. It's primary purpose, however, is to regulate a the implants that control vital functions. The technology is too complex to replicate, and it is not repairable. Defective cortical nodes must be replaced, and nodes from dead drones do not work. The Primary neurodes must be realigned before a cortical node can be replaced.
The Borg do not reproduce, they only assimilate. Assimilated children and babies are put into maturation chambers until they are capable of independent biological operation. Drones who come out of their maturation chamber too early are not fully assimilated, and less dependent on their Borg implants. When a maturation cycle is complete, the drone awaits a designation and instructions from the collective.
An axonal amplifier is a type of borg neuroprocessor.
Each drone has a proximity transciever in their cranial implant. When activated, it indicates a Borg presence nearby. |
History |
The Borg are a race of "enhanced" humanoids native to the Delta Quadrant. Originally completely organic, their evolutionary path led them to create a highly effective hive social structure that achieves a collective consciousness through cybernetic implants.
The Borg conquer entire civilizations, assimilating all people and technology. Their civilization is comprised of thousands of worlds, and is located in the Delta Quadrant. The Borg have assimilated thousands of species.
The remains of Borg vessel found in Artic Circle in 2152, along with two drones. The researchers had no knowledge of the Borg. The Borg revived, and assimilated the research team. They escaped Earth in a modified transport. They were stopped by the Enterprise NX-01, but not before the Borg sent a message to coordinates deep in the Delta Quadrant. The message would take about 200 years to be received.
The El-Aurians were assimilated by the Borg in the 23rd century.
First contact between the Borg and the Federation occured in 2365, when Q transported the USS Enterprise-D to the Delta Quadrant. While this action may have brought the Federation to the Borg's attention earlier, it also gave the Federation time to develop a defense strategy.
A lone Borg cube attacked the Federation in 2366, at the battle of Wolf 359. An armada of 40 Federation ships fought the Borg, many of which were destroyed before the Federation succeeded in defeating the Borg. 11,000 lives were lost.
A Borg scout ship crashed in Federation space in 2368. The sole survivor, nicknamed Hugh, was taken aboard the USS Enterprise-D. Crew members developed an invasive program, designed to destroy the borg, but they refrained from using it. Instead they hoped that Hugh's experience of individuality would influence change within the collective. Hugh was returned to the crash site, and the ship that rescued him was indeed effected by Hugh's experiences. The Borg, however, were lost without the collective, and eagerly followed the android Lore, when he appointed himself their leader in 2369. Lore's plans were thwarted by his brother Data.
The Caatati were assimilated in 2372.
In 2373, the Borg attacked the Federation again, and on the verge of defeat, went back in time to assimilate Earth in the past, but were stopped.
Also in 2373, the Borg invaded fluidic space, and became engaged in a conflict with Species 8472, which they were losing, until they received aid from Federation starship Voyager, in exchange for safe passage through their space.
In 2374, the Borg assimilated Species 116.
Occasionally, some Borg manage to break free from the collective. There is a colony of liberated Borg in the Alpha Quadrant, led by Hugh, and another in the Nekrit Expanse in the Delta Quadrant.
In 2377, the Federation starship Voyager was able to infect the collective with a virus based on an existing flaw in Borg programming. The flaw allowed drones to express their individuality while regenerating in a place they called 'Unimatrix Zero". The virus created by Voyager's crew allowed the Borg to retain the memory of their individuality after their regeneration cycle was over. The virus also allowed Borg some borg to sever their link to the collective. Unimatrix Zero was then destroyed to prevent the collective from finding and repairing those drones effected by the virus. The effected Borg are mounting a resistance against the collective. |
Society |
The immense knowledge of all the assimilated Borg minds function as one, and each Borg is part of a giant subspace communications network called the Borg Collective. All critical information is relayed to each Borg through this network, allowing the instantaneous adaptation and reaction to any outside factors. The hive society of the Borg is extremely specialized: the decisions are not made by the Borg themselves, rather, the needs of the Collective determines their actions.
To the Borg, individual thought and action are considered imperfect and weak. They travel through the universe in their cubicles or spheres seeking new civilizations to assimilate into their own consciousness, or in their words, "add the biological and technological distinctiveness of to our own". They don't simply assimilate individuals, they strip cultures, races, entire worlds of their identity. New species encountered are classified with numbers and referred to as such, further eliminating the distinctiveness of the species. Some species are rejected by the Borg if it is determined that they will detract from the Borg goal of perfection. The emptied shells of assimilated individuals are integrated into the hive while their understanding and technology are added into the Collective. If a Borg drone dies or is beyond repair, his memory will still be retained by the Collective. So in a sense all Borg are immortal.
The Collective can be subdivided into three components: A queen to oversee and monitor the hive activity, battle drones that concentrate on defense and offense, and the vast numbers of drones whose jobs it is to maintain the hive's efficient systems and carry out orders given by the Collective. The Queen does not function as a breeder of new drones, but rather as the central consciousness which dictates the will and motives of the Collective. She uses the pronoun "I" instead of "We" but does not appear to be truly individual, instead maintaining awareness above that of that of an ordinary Borg. |
Technology |
The Borg developed a biomolecular warhead with the help of a Federation starship. Based on a photon torpedo, the warhead was designed to deliver modified Borg nanoprobes to a Species 8472 bioship.
Borg ships are cube or spherical in shape. They have powerful energy weapons, and can repair damage very quickly. Borg ships can travel faster than warp 9 by means of a transwarp conduit. Some can also create a temporal vortex. A borg scout ship is a cube with a mass of 2.5 million metric tons, and has a crew of 5.
The Borg believe Particle 010, the Omega Molecule, exists in a flawless state, and are willing to go to any lengths to assimilate it. The Borg use immense transwarp hubs, a large group of transwarp conduits which are entered by apertures.
Borg cubes are subjected to extreme gravimetric shear when they enter a transwarp conduit. They project a structual integrity field ahead of the cube to counter act it.
Borg nanoprobes are worth about 6 bars of latinum per unit due to their ability to reanimate necrotic tissue, and to slow down the aging process. They are encoded to use any technology they encounter. Each drone has millions of nanoprobes in their body.
Borg ocular implants can detect irregularities in space time. |
Notes |
| The Borg refer to Vulcans as Species 3259, the Kazon as Species 329, and the Talaxians as Species 218. |
